Robson Green returns for a darker, deadlier second series of The Game

Channel 5 have officially commissioned a second series of their hit psychological thriller The Game, and fans of Robson’s chilling turn as serial killer Patrick will be thrilled to hear he’s back – and more dangerous than ever.

The new series picks up a year after the events of season one. Former detective Huw (Jason Watkins), still recovering from a brutal stabbing, has retreated to a remote coastal home with his wife Alice (Sunetra Sarker). He believes he has finally escaped Patrick’s grip. But as The Game makes clear, peace is never simple, and Patrick’s influence continues to seep into every corner of Huw’s life.

Robson teases a return that promises to unsettle viewers all over again: “Stepping back into the world of The Game for series two is an exciting challenge. Just when you thought it was over, Patrick is back pulling strings with a vengeance. 5 audiences are in for another brilliant ride.”

Robson’s performance in The Game was widely praised for its unnerving subtlety, a controlled, sinister presence that critics described as “enjoyably sinister” (Daily Telegraph) and “terrific” (Radio Times) in its psychological precision.

For long‑time followers of his career, Patrick represents one of Robson’s most striking departures from his more recent familiar roles in Grantchester, Age Before Beauty, and Extreme Fishing. It’s a character that taps into his ability to play charm, menace, and emotional complexity all at once.

Series two gives him even more room to explore that darkness. With Patrick now behind bars, the tension shifts from physical threat to psychological warfare – a space where Robson excels.

What we know about series two

  • Filming is underway, with the series set to air on Channel 5 later this year.
  • Jason Watkins, Sunetra Sarker, Indy Lewis, and Amber James all return.
  • New cast members include Sonny Ashbourne Serkis, Tanya Franks, Dominic Rowan, and more.
  • Toby Frow returns to direct, with Tom Grieves back as writer.
  • The series is produced by Clapperboard in association with Sphere Abacus.

The creative team behind the first series – praised for its tight pacing and psychological depth – are back to push the story into even darker territory.

A bigger spotlight on Patrick?

While plot details are tightly guarded, the press release hints that Patrick’s reach extends far beyond his prison cell. For fans, this opens the door to deeper exploration of Patrick’s past and the possibility of Patrick manipulating events from the shadows.

Given the acclaim Robson received for his performance in series one, it’s no surprise Channel 5 is leaning into his character’s chilling impact.

The Game continues a remarkable run for Robson, who has spent the last decade balancing warm, grounded roles with darker, more complex characters. Patrick stands out as one of his most memorable creations – a villain whose quiet menace lingers long after the credits roll.

Series two looks set to deepen that legacy.
