TV adventurer and national treasure Robson Green is swapping his fishing rod for a rallying cry as he throws his weight behind Friends of the River Dee – a fresh and vibrant campaign from the award-winning River Dee Trust in Aberdeenshire.
Known for his wild escapades and love of the great outdoors, Robson’s latest mission isn’t just about catching fish – it’s about saving them. The River Dee, a jewel of Royal Deeside, is facing serious threats from climate change, and Robson’s stepping up to protect the waters that have long captured his heart.
“The Dee is magical,” Robson says. “It’s home to Atlantic salmon, otters, freshwater pearl mussels – and memories for so many of us. But rising temperatures and extreme weather are putting it all at risk. That’s why I’m backing the River Dee Trust’s campaign to build a community of supporters. Whether you live nearby or just love visiting, become a Friend of the River Dee. Let’s protect this place together.”
The River Dee Trust isn’t just talking the talk – they’ve already planted over half a million native trees (on their way to a million), restored wetlands, and rewilded tributaries to help provide cool spots along the river and boost biodiversity. And they’re not stopping there.
Through their education programme, they’re inspiring the next generation with free school visits and outdoor learning sessions, reaching thousands of children every year.
So what do you get as a Friend? A tree planted in your name, a snazzy membership certificate, quarterly updates, fun factsheets, and VIP access to community events, volunteering gigs, and family-friendly activities. All for just £5 a month or £60 a year – whether you’re flying solo or signing up the whole household.
Claire Fleming, the Trust’s engagement officer, is thrilled to have Robson on board: “His passion is infectious. The River Dee flows through the heart of our communities – whether you’re walking, fishing, swimming, or just soaking up the views, we all have a stake in its future.”
So if you’ve ever watched Robson Green reel in a monster catch or wax lyrical about nature’s wonders, now’s your chance to join him in a real-life adventure. Become a Friend of the River Dee – and help write the next chapter in this river’s story.
